About the Book

This book is a reprint of the plans and specification to the gnome engine planes from a worn book used by the author's father, Lieutenant Frederick Ellam of the royal flying Corps. It is in part a tribute to the daring, the curiosity and courage of the early pilots.

My father was a pilot in the first World War and left me these facts and pictures. They contain all the details needed for a person to build one of them today, either as a radio controlled model or a full scale one, built of spruce, with a small modern engine.

The author is offering to facilitate organizing individuals expressing an interest in building and perhaps flying a replica of the 1916 plane.

The author, himself a 40 year pilot, recalls one day landing on a bank of clouds to see what the clouds were made of. He turned off the engine and let the plane fall through only to realize that clouds are made of fog!
