"Wake up! Wake up! Your alarm is ringing! Rise and shine! If you don't get up, you're going to be late for school!"
"Okay mom, I hear you," mumbled Englisha.
"Get up!""Mom, I'm awake," whispered Englisha.
"I'm coming back in five minutes to see if you are up." Englisha listened as her mother quickly walked out of her room and down the hall to her brother Eddie's bedroom. "Eddie, wake up! You don't want to miss the first day of school!"Missing the first day of school wouldn't be such a bad idea, thought Englisha. Maybe I could pretend like I don't feel well. Even if I decided to go to school, what would I wear? I had to return my clothes from Hotness. I refuse to start a new school year with old clothes. I just won't, go to school.
Englisha's thoughts were interrupted by her mother's loud voice. ''Englisha, are you awake?" asked Mrs. Regents as she approached Englisha's bedroom door."Has it been five minutes already?" asked Englisha with the sheet covers over her head.
"Yep, that's how time flies.""Mom, I'm not feeling well. So I don't think I'll be able to go to school."
Englisha's mother slowly walked over to Englisha's bedside."What's wrong?"
"It's my stomach. It feels like it's in knots.""Oh, that's just first day jitters."
"Huh?'""You're just a little nervous which is why your stomach feels that way. As a child, I also had first day jitters, sometimes even second day jitters." Englisha giggled. "I think we have jitters because we are fearful of the unknown. We don't know if we'll like our teachers or if other students will like us. I remember those days so I know what you're going through."
"Thanks mom.""I also know that a first day outfit is important so let's take a look in your closet," said Englisha's mother walking over to Englisha's closet. "Where is that nice blue top I bought for you?"
Englisha quickly jumped up out of her bed. "Thanks, mom! I think I can find something to wear on my own.""Okay Englisha, but if you come downstairs looking ridiculous, I will send you back upstairs to change." "Okay mom.''

About the Book
It had been one interesting summer vacation with several near death experiences. Englisha was just excited to be alive and to start senior year at Jackson High. A new school year meant a fresh start. Englisha and her best friend Laurenthina had an argument over the summer. Englisha accused Laurenthina of being jealous of her relationship with David. But Englisha never thought that it would really be the end of their friendship. After all, they've been best friends since Junior High. When Englisha decides to apologize to Laurenthina, it seems as if Laurenthina is not quite ready to mend their friendship. In fact, it seems like her plan is to make Englisha’s senior year, a living nightmare. When Englisha tells David about her problems, he surprisingly defends Laurenthina. David’s secret eventually comes out and their relationship is tested. Englisha will have to learn the value of trusting again, forgiveness and love.
About the Author
Michellene Barrett, an elementary school teacher, obtained a bachelor’s degree in Childhood Education from City College of New York. She also received a master’s degree in literacy from Columbia University Teachers College. Michellene has previously published the book Englisha and David’s Adventurous Vacation. Englisha and Laurenthina: Best Friends Forever? is the second book in the Englisha series.
