The park is abandoned here at eight a.m. except for a man walking his dog whose extruded contribution, I’m sure, is a direct violation of some city ordinance. What does it matter? It fits well with the litter and neglect. I am guessing that the park funds went elsewhere when the neighborhood fell into urban decay, and it is now used to maintain nicer parks, in nicer neighborhoods, for dimpled, towheaded darlings, who don’t have to carry switchblades to school to survive. I looked at the file on my lap. It was a lot nicer when little Carrie Mobley used to come here on her way home from school, to swing or climb to the highest level of the fort and slide down the twisting chute. Little Carrie Mobley, who, despite the passing of time, will never be more than nearly ten. My memory returns, filling up my brain like that mouth-searing refill at the donut shop: still painful after twenty-one years.

Ronnie Remonda has been writing for nearly a quarter of a century. A born cynic, he has never taken anything at face value, nor has he been afraid to take the time to look at things from another’s point of view. Mr. Remonda writes to please himself which is not always easy to do. His passion has always been short stories which have been compared to episodes of The Twilight Zone.
