Return to Glenlord

For those of us who experienced those days and speak fondly of them, we realize they can never be re-created regardless of the effort. The era of the 1940’s and 1950’s style resorts is gone. Vacationing in cabins has become a thing of the past. The Riviera cabins of this country have been replaced by Ramada Inns, but there was something about living in those cabins that really fulfilled you. It’s what was available, and the people just accepted it. I never thought about the future during those years. I never pictured myself as being “grown-up.” To think that someday I would be my father’s age never entered my mind. He was “old,” and I was young, and that’s all there was to it! I believed that my summers with my friends Alkie, Angelo, and Jimmy would never end. I guess we were living in a dream world. The thing I can say about us is that we certainly were adventurous. There was a constant vibration in all of us that wouldn’t let up. It was ongoing every season, and we were never afraid to try new things. Our minds were always active. Every summer belonged to us, and we grabbed it with both hands. A day never passed that we didn’t at least talk about trying something new. To think that some of us, or all of us, might not be in Michigan, or anywhere else, every year never occurred to me. How could it be possible? “Michigan will always be there,” I thought. We were too busy enjoying ourselves to think very seriously about anything. We were carefree. All of our worries were placed on hold for a couple of months, and we did what we wanted almost all of the time. Our parents gave this gift to us, and we embraced it with our hearts, our souls, and anything else we had within us. If I think about it too deeply, I get carried away with a deep sense of nostalgia. I am so thankful I had the experience, and I can’t ask for more than that.
