"I think we can make it," he said with confident hope. "When I say run, don't think, just run." "Okay," she said with some nervousness and hesitance in her voice. As they planned and prepared for their sprint, there was some more movement in the bushes ahead. This time, is was louder than it had ever been previously. They could hear the shuffling of feet. From the sound of it, it was more than just one person. To the slaves, it sounded like an army. They both slowly raised thier heads up over the top of the log. Their eyes were as wide as saucers, their mouths were open, and their hands were gripping the log so tight that their knuckles were white. As they peered through the open path to the bushes ahead; they could see what looked like two crouching figures moving from behind the bush closest to the path. From the looks of it the shadowy figures were about to step onto the path. For the first time, the both of them knew, this time with certainty, that it was not an animal behind those bushes. Their worst nightmare had come true. They were being stalked. And worse yet, they were being stalked in the darkness and in these horrible weather conditions. "I have an idea," the male slave said as he quickly crouched back behind the log. "Well hurry, what is it?" She said crouching down along with him. "I have this flashlight; it's our only hope of safely getting out of here." Suddenly a deep voice echoed from the woods, "I'm going to enjoy killing you!" It was the menacing, deep voice slowly and teasingly coming from behind the bush. "Hey, I recognize that voice!" The girl said instantly. "Shhh, keep it down!" The male slave whispered. "Yeah, come on you spooks, come out! We've been listening to you niggers whispering this whole time!" Another man shouted from the bush. "I told you to keep it down!" The male slave said to the girl in a strong, low whisper. "You niggers always think you can get away!" The man with the deep voice said. "Don't come any closer!" The girl shouted with a frightened, shaky sounding voice. "Whatch ya doin? That's not gonna work," her male counterpart whispered. "I think them there spooks is a scared of us Junior." The taunting voice was loud enough as the man with the deep voice was talking to his partner, that the two slaves could clearly hear him. "Yeah, they's a nothing but some worthless cow dung, looks like we're going to do a little jungle hunting." Both of them were laughing out loud. By now they were standing on the path. They both were well over six feel tall. It was too dark for the slaves to tell if they were thin or fat. "That's it, we're going to die, did you hear that old country bumpkin, he said he was going to kill us and get rich. These men are hit men! I bet you they can hit a target from a mile away! We don't stand a chance!" The girl continued saying in her state of panic. "Calm down, it's still dark, we's a still have that going for us," the male slave said, trying to reassure her. This stand off in the cold damp woods had been going on for quite some time now, and it was getting closer to daylight with each passing minute. "Ker boom!" One of the men's shotguns blasted a shot into the cloudy nightime sky."They have a gun! They have a gun!" The girl shouted in a whisper. By now her panic had reached an all time high. "We is gotta go now!" The male slave said. This time he didn't whisper, for the first time since the girl had seen the shadowy figure, he yelled!
