AN EMPEROR AMONG US

About the Book

In 1849, thirty-one-year-old Joshua Norton sails into San Francisco Bay with $40,000 in his pocket and a determination to make his fortune. In the feverish world of Gold Rush California, he succeeds beyond expectation, until one disastrous gamble destroys nearly everything. Then Joshua Norton does something extraordinary. Penniless, humiliated, and dismissed by respectable society, he reinvents himself as Norton I, Emperor of the United States. What might have been merely the strange fantasy of a ruined businessman becomes something far more remarkable. San Francisco embraces its unlikely emperor. Restaurants feed him, theaters reserve seats for him, merchants honor his homemade currency, and citizens respectfully greet him in the streets. From his self-appointed throne, Norton issues proclamations, challenges politicians, condemns corruption and prejudice, and proposes astonishing ideas - including a bridge across San Francisco Bay - decades before others would make them reality. But who was the man behind the uniform and imperial declarations? An Emperor Among Us tells the captivating true story of one of America’s most unforgettable eccentrics: a man who lost his fortune, invented a kingdom, and somehow became richer in legend than money could ever have made him. Sometimes history’s most extraordinary figures never held any real power at all.
