The “419” scam, commonly associated with Nigeria, is a form of transnational financial fraud that has evolved into a global criminal enterprise. Its most common forms include advance fee fraud, black money scams, life insurance scams, and credit card/counterfeit check fraud. In advance fee fraud, victims are persuaded to make repeated payments in anticipation of receiving large sums of money from fictitious business deals, inheritances, or government transactions. Black money scams involve convincing victims that chemically treated currency can be restored and shared for profit. Life insurance scams rely on forged documents to obtain fraudulent insurance payouts, while credit card and counterfeit check scams involve the purchase of goods using stolen financial instruments.

The 419 scam affects both foreigners and Nigerians. Local fraudsters engage in schemes such as tenancy fraud, bank scams, mining scams, and the sale of supposedly cheap goods, while more sophisticated syndicates target victims across Europe, America, Asia, and Africa. These crimes are often supported by related offenses including money laundering, forgery, counterfeit documents, and identity theft.
