About the Book

North Carolina, 1862. The outbreak of the Civil War has brought heartache to the life of young Cherokee brave Moses Armachain. To help save his people from the dictates of the white man, he decides to join Confederate Colonel William Thomas’s regiment of Indians and Highlanders from Western North Carolina and Eastern Tennessee. Armachain survives perilous adventures and misfortunes in his quest, his will to live matched only by his need to protect his brothers-in-arms. But when Armachain attempts to rescue his childhood Cherokee friend, Aggie Lossiah, he discovers that she has been violated by the lustful Union Colonel Kirk. Revenge wipes out all other feelings, and he determines that the Yankees will pay. In the midst of the growing conflict between Thomas’s Legion and invading Federal forces, the bond between Aggie and Armachain culminates in a love so powerful that not even the ravages of war affect it. Their lives are repeatedly threatened by wild animals, bushwhackers, marauders, and Union soldiers. Written with vivid historic detail and true human emotion, Armachain tells the little-known tale of the Eastern Cherokees’ role in the Confederacy during the Civil War.

About the Author

Two events inspired this novel’s creation. Years ago, the author served as medical officer for the Indian Health Service in Cherokee, North Carolina. He treated, befriended, and admired many tribal members. Recently, he acquired the cover tintype and wondered about its story. Presently, he is a physician living with his wife in Charlotte, North Carolina.
