On November 8, 2016, Donald John Trump secured the 270 Electoral College votes needed to become the 45th President of the United States. It is no secret that Donald Trump’s 2016 election to the Presidency was one of the most stunning upsets in political history. It shocked the political establishment when a political outsider with no prior experience in elected office defeated a heavily favored Democratic opponent. Trump’s 2016 triumph was a seismic political upset, driven by a coalition of working-class voters who felt ignored by the political elite. Shocking, stunning, seismic, unexpected, unprecedented, astonishing, and improbable were adjectives used to describe Trump’s 2016 victory by the American press. These words reflect the emotional and structural impact of Trump’s surprising election. How did Trump win? Was it because of name recognition or the estimated $5 billion in free media coverage? Did he win because Hillary represented the elite while he appealed to the average American in “fly-over” country? Numerous books like Shattered: Inside Hillary Clinton’s Doomed Campaign by Jonathan Allen and Amie Parnes (2017), Hacks: The Inside Story of the Break-ins and Breakdowns That Put Donald Trump in the White House by Donna Brazile (2017), Unbelievable: My Front-Row Seat to the Craziest Campaign in American History by Katy Tur (2017), and articles such as “How Trump Won the Election: Volatility and a Common Touch” by David Smith (The Guardian, November 9, 2016) and “Why Trump Won” by Victor Davis Hanson (Hoover Institution, November 10, 2016) have been written to explain Trump’s unlikely, unexpected, and meteoric rise to the Presidency. Many cite his anti-establishment message, outsider appeal, use of social media (especially Twitter), focus on swing states, excessive free media coverage, failure of Hillary Clinton to excite the Obama coalition, the shift of non-college-educated white voters to the GOP, etc. While these factors, and many others, may help explain the meteoric rise and surprising election of Donald Trump, I contend that there is a theological reason why Donald Trump won in 2016 (and later in 2024). In other words, the unseen realm was involved in Trump’s election.
