About the Book
My journey was so long that I doubted my dream of becoming a teacher would ever come true. I never gave up and took one class at a time. I took ESL classes for two years, I went to college for two years, graduated from Bakersfield, University in 2009 and finally from Mount Saint Mary’s College in 2012. During my first two years in California, I was single. I got married and my husband didn’t let me attend college. My fight at home was for my freedom for an education and my freedom to decide about my life. My decision to leave my husband in Mexico was the start of my freedom. My parents in Mexico wanted a daughter surmise and respectful. I wanted my freedom and decide to get married or not. During my marriage, I suffered in silence because I was afraid that my husband was going to prison if I told the police about his physical abuse. I was afraid that my children knew about this abuse. I was afraid that my children could be taken away from me if my husband went to prison.
About the Author
I was born in Mexico in 1956; I graduated from high school in 1978. Unable to attend college, I left Mexico in 1979 in search of new opportunities. Since then, I have been attending night school in California, taking ESL classes while working in the onion fields. I entered college in 2003 and graduated in 2012 with a master’s degree in Education. My career has included roles as a preschool teacher for two years, a private nanny for four years, a substitute teacher for seven years, and a teacher for two years. I exited the education field in 2020. I have self-published five books, two in English and three in Spanish. As an educator, my aim is to raise awareness about the need for significant changes in education. We require teachers who can communicate in two languages at the high school level. Preferring to maintain English-only schools does not adequately prepare students for university studies abroad. The world needs professionals like educators, doctors, lawyers, scientists, and others who are capable of communicating in two languages. I live in Lancaster, California.
