About the Book

An assembly of college women—all members of the Gamma Sigma Omega Chapter in Savannah, Georgia—continue a legacy of service in this second volume highlighting their work from 1943 to 2023.

To this day, the mantle of service, social justice, educational equity, health consciousness, and a myriad of other human issues continue to drive the members of the Savannah Chapter.

When the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention eased coronavirus restrictions in 2023, members pivoted to meet the changing needs of the community.

In this volume, Bernadette Ball Oliver, Dr. Deonn B. Stone Ellison, and the History Book Committee share noteworthy details that capture the essence of the work done by members as well as the formidable challenges they’ve overcome over the last decade.

The book is presented as a series of “open letters” from Gamma Sigma Omega Chapter presidents who served from 2013-2023. The letters are geared to anyone who wants to read a fascinating history, revealing a roadmap of intentional service and dedication.

Each letter concludes with parting words of wisdom that create a clear transition to the next president’s tenure.

About the Author

Bernadette Ball Oliver, a Georgia resident, is a former southern school district associate superintendent. She is the co-editor of this volume and a current and active member of the Gamma Sigma Omega Chapter.

Dr. Deonn B. Stone Ellison is a former school and district level educational leader and university teacher education instructor. She is also co-editor of this volume. She is retired and lives in Georgia, where she serves as archivist of the Gamma Sigma Omega Chapter.
