I typically do not read very quickly, but when I was reading the first volume of the Creation of the Inevitable, I could not put the book down until I finished it. I do not want to give anything away, but the detail, the thrill, and the plot twists in this book make it a must-read. I would highly recommend it to anybody, particularly those who love a short read with multiple volumes. I could not be more excited for the second volume to come out! The Raven's Doctor is a creative genius!

Dark fantasy is not my typical genre, but I enjoy reading novels from different genres and new writers because stepping outside of my comfort zone often pushes my brain to work in different ways. That was certainly the case with Creation of the Inevitable. When this book began, I immediately thought this was going to be a book about hope and survival. That was completely myopic; this is a book about what’s possible if you remove your own constraints on what you think is possible for you. The main character is simultaneously lively and a lovely individual. While many of the events are surreal, his ideas and dialogue make him someone endearing and relatable. What really kept me hooked was that every time I thought I knew what was coming next, a completely unanticipated turn would pop up. It was a fun, enjoyable read. I read the book in a single sitting, which I rarely do anymore. I’m really looking forward to volume 2!

Creation of the Inevitable Volume 1 introduces the reader to a unique world of magic. We explore this world through our narrator, Malcolm, who is also new to this world, having been diverted there after dying by his friend (girlfriend?) Denise, who is surprised to learn is actually Death (or more specifically, the daughter of Death.) The quick, matter of fact pace of the story telling (a few weeks often pass in the matter of a few sentences) gives it a fairytale-like feel. Magic can be a crutch when lazily used to wash away obstacles. In this story, though, there are rules, and a lot of the fun of this volume is found as Malcom applies his scientific mind to discovering the rules of magic in this land. The book, however, asks far more questions than it answers. Why is Death so hot and cold, obsessively lusting after Malcom one minute and torturing him the next? Why does Malcom busy himself creating various mutated deer/man species? What stakes are there for a hero made immortal by Death, who can rip his own head off for the mild amusement of the local doctor? I understand that this is only Volume 1 of some unknown number of volumes, but I do feel cheated that nothing feels resolved. Surely future volumes will answer our questions as we explore more of this terrific world.

Creation of the Inevitable: Volume 1, by The Raven’s Doctor is by far one of the more unique books I have read in a long time. I find a lot of books, regardless of quality or content, to be a bit formula at times and I loved that this book stands out. The author does not stick to any particular trope or formula but tells a captivating story in their own style. The story hits the ground running and does not hold back on the action or the progression of the plot. It only took me a few hours to read it, and it definitely left me wanting to read more. It’s hard to explain fully what happens without giving spoilers, but you do not want spoilers for this book. It is thoroughly unpredictable. The characters are likeable, their thoughts and emotions are forthright and relatable, which I love. I found myself at times both loving and hating the characters’ behavior. They are written in a way that their humanity shows through. I have always loved authors who can write fully “human” people with the entire scope of good/bad inherent in their personalities. The Raven’s Doctor doesn’t simply write evil villains and good and sweet heroes. Their characters are people with foibles and good qualities both. The settings are descriptive and, as a reader, I got a full picture of what this world must look like. Even in the moments where the author is explaining the technical aspects of the universe they created, it is done in such an engrossing way that it adds to the color of the story. This was worth the read and I recommend it! I look forward to reading future volumes to see where the story goes. I am definitely hungry for more!

Fun and different! This was a quick and fun read. I'm excited to see what's in the next book. This was a great journey to a unique world. I love new and different fantasy worlds and this book had me turning pages quickly. I liked how quickly it flowed from chapter to chapter and kept the story moving along. Looking forward to more!
