A Walk with the Black Moses, Sandy Stephens’ Inspiring Stories of Hope and Determination is not the book Sandy expected to write and publish. Instead of being his autobiography, it is a representation of his example to others of how belief in self, goal setting with God’s guidance and hard work can result in a richly rewarded life and legacy. I believed the best way to find evidence of Sandy’s impact on others was to solicit input from a representative group of people through a survey of seven open-ended questions, plus a comments page (Appendix A). Twenty-nine people, including family members, friends, teammates, fans, and colleagues, responded to the survey. The observations of these supporters represent a snapshot of the influence Sandy had on the lives and aspirations of others. Their invaluable perceptions of how he walked through life and the legacy he left behind will be shared throughout the book. The goal of A Walk with the Black Moses, Sandy Stephens’ Inspiring Stories of Hope and Determination is to bring the reader enlightenment of the mind, understanding of the heart, and enrichment of the spirit. Evaluate your internal barometer as you read. Are there dreams and passions you want to explore? Why have you been too timid to pursue them? Is fear of failure getting in your way? Your personal “greatness” may be waiting for you to start the climb toward it. The journey starts with believing in self, setting lofty goals, then acting on and never losing sight of your envisioned success.

About the Author
Barbara R. Stephens Foster is the eldest daughter of the Stephens family. She is using her intimate knowledge of her brother, Sandy Stephens, to share how his life can be a beacon of hope for others. Barbara spent nearly 34 years (1965-1999) working for the University of Minnesota (U of MN) General College (GC) Office of the Dean. She holds a Bachelor of General Studies degree. She is a Lifetime Member of the Minnesota Alumni Association and a U of MN Alumni Service Award recipient. Her outstanding service awards include GC’s Alfred L. Vaughan, Jeanne T. Lupton, and Civil Service recognitions. Other University honors include the President’s Outstanding Service Award and Outstanding Civil Service Staff Award. Following retirement and until his death, Barbara worked with Sandy on his autobiography. She left employment at Osseo Area Schools in 2018 to devote fulltime to writing. Barbara is an efficient, articulate, caring, confidante devoted to her family and friends, grounded in her faith, and enthusiastic about the U of MN.
