Lonnie E. Shipe was born prematurely and with cerebral palsy. His prognosis was grim, and his doctors did not expect him to live, much less thrive. In Tie My Shoes, he shares a collection of stories and remembrances from his life, telling what it was like trying to function with a handicap in society. Shipe chronicles a host of experiences and challenges such as dealing with dating, sexuality, self-worth, and depression to struggling with leg braces, crutches, a “funny” voice, painful leg cramps, bladder control, and an accident that resulted in a broken neck. His stories give insight into what it was like trying to be “normal” when his body was far from it. From attending public schools, to earning a master’s degree, and marrying and raising a family, this memoir discusses how his faith in God and the eternal support from his mother helped him succeed. Positive and faith filled, Tie My Shoes offers a look into one man’s hopes and dreams; it showcases his hard work to overcome despite his physical barriers.

About the Author

Lonnie E. Shipe was born prematurely and with cerebral palsy. He earned a bachelor’s degree, a master’s degree in counseling education, and completed a post-graduate school internship in counseling education. He is a father and grandfather.

CAN'T NEVER DID ANYTHING! When you feel low or belive that life has dealt you a bum hand, then that is the time to remember this book. Of course, if you haven't read Lonnie Shipe's story then you won't be able to refer to it. So read the story, it is both sobering and inspirational. It tells of how someone with all the best reasons for having a "can't do" attitude tackled life from a "can do" perspective - and won hands down! Many people dream of writing a book but few do. It's not easy, difficult in fact and demands relentless determination. Lonnie's book, both the content and the fact that he has written it, proves without doubt that he possesses that drive and commitment. And the book is well written. The short chapters make for easy reading. His story opens a window on to a life of relentless difficulty such as few people ever experience and most can barely imagine. Yet he tells his tale with candour and good humour. Never do you feel a sense of self pity. And therein lies the power of his story. It's an eye-opener, a tear-jerker (if you're that way inclined); but mostly you'll smile. It's hugely uplifting.

Lonnie was initially a friend and neighbor of my husband. I remember after one of your surgeries when some of us guys from church would come over to walk with you, sometimes to the end of the street and back in the NC summer heat and humidity. A book that truly opened my eyes, heart and thoughts. I use to babysit for Lonnie, I have known Lonnie since he was a youngster. His book, "Tie My Shoes" shares his life struggles, born prematurely with cerebral palsy. Lonnie lived in pain daily all through his life. But the pain didn't stop his smiles and determination. I read Tie My Shoes by Lonnie E. Shipe. He was born with a physical handicap that kept getting worse. He suffered humiliation and isolation. Treatments for his condition hurt. Doctors told his parents to expect little improvement or much of a life for him. He wasn't supposed to go past 9th grade. He wondered how he had sinned to deserve such a fate, and yet, he never gave up on himself. He finished college, married and became a father. He typed his story with a pointer. This book will give hope and inspiration to others with handicaps and their loved ones. Lonnie's story is his journey from hell and how he found meaning. I hope this book finds its way to all the people who should read it.

It had been almost 40 years since I met Lonnie. I met him at LaGrange Park Baptist Church when I was eleven and even then I could discern a great tenacity and positive spirit with Lonnie. Lonnie and I reconnected earlier this year and I learned pf a book hat he had written titled "Tie My Shoes". I must say I was immediately intrigued and purchased a copy as soon as I could. I am honored and very appreciative that I have a signed copy. I have finished reading his book and I am in awe of the life that Lonnie has lived; from his many challenges in obtaining his education, to his family life growing up, his wonderful wife and daughter, his journey's have taken to the other side of the world and back. Lonnie's book is a must read. I experienced many different emotions as i read through each chapter and when you read about the phrase and title of, "Tie My Shoes" it will put a smile on your face. One day my friend, what a glorious day that will be.
