About the Book

In 1930, Dr. Andrew Bass murdered his accomplice in what was thought to be the largest attempted life insurance fraud in the history of the country. The day after the murder, Bass and a local bootlegger unloaded the body from Bass’ car and laid it on the side of a highway in Northwest Arkansas, setting in motion one of the wildest mysteries anyone in the Ozarks had ever seen. Newspaper accounts after Bass’ arrest described the doctor as a farmer and an entrepreneur, but he was also the author’s great-grandfather.
