About the Author

Mary Dolor is a registered nurse with a master’s in geriatric nursing, certified as a Geriatric Clinical Nurse Specialist. She is the owner of a business that provides patient advocacy services, educational workshops for clinicians and the community, and legal consultation to plaintiff and defense attorneys litigating elder abuse cases. THROES HOLDS OUT HOPE TO THOSE BEING CRUSHED BY THE ADDICTION AROUND THEM.

Could not put your book down. Read it in almost one day! Throes is a must read for all Americans to do a reality check concerning addiction affecting so many of our family and friends. Mary has an amazing ability to share the underbelly of the beast and how the beast of addiction can rob precious lives of sacred events and special chapters in a family. The book was thoughtful and well written. My heart breaks for Mary, but the beast is relentless. Those in addiction fail to see the ripples of pain they cause and place blame on everyone and everything but themselves. Those who love the addict have a difficult time protecting themselves and find themselves thrust into lies, deceit and codependency. The book takes you through pieces of this life that Mary has lived, through the eyes of a mother who, even as she has distanced herself- still clearly loves her daughter and wants her daughter to succeed and be healthy while also protecting herself. I loved reading this Parable! Each chapter captivated me more. I especially loved the questions at the end of the chapters. They gave me great insight and perspective and helped me place the right answers into my own life. It is one thing to read about another person’s life and how they handled it, but it is so insightful to be able to ask yourself what would I have done? And what I am doing? I would highly recommend ‘Throes: A Transformative Parable’ to anyone who has themself experienced any current or past addiction or has ever been codependent to an addict at any point in their life. It’s a story many of us can probably relate to. While reading Mary Dolor’s book and answering the questions at the end of each chapter, I looked back to my own experiences with people in my life who have struggled or are still struggling with addictions to substances. So many stories came to mind and caused me to examine how this impacted my life and may still be impacting it. This was a well written and expressed Journey. One that will keep my gears turning for a long time.

This book truly lets the reader understand how a mother's love gives her the strength to do everything in her power to help her child navigate a difficult life issue. She endured an onslaught of manipulation for years toward this endeavor. I have never had to live through this type of trauma personally and I admire the author's tenacity. The book is extremely well written and grabs the reader's interest and holds it in its grip. The questions at the end of each chapter can be a major help to those who are dealing with this situation in their own lives. I put off writing this review for a moment. After reading the book and relating to every page it continues to bring tears to my eyes as I reflect on the beast that has captured my family for years. Before reading Throes I felt defeated, isolated, helpless and alone. I was very embarrassed that I couldn't make my family better. Whether you are living first hand with an addict in the family or are a third party to it, Mary Dolor provides the tools to understand not only the mind of an addict,but to also understand both the mind and actions of the family members who are influenced by the addict. Mary P. Ryan 5.0 out of 5 stars This book allows people still trying to “fix” the addict in their lives to finally walk away. Reviewed in the United States on June 4, 2023 I felt this book was written about my own daughter. My daughter used everyone and everything around her to get her next high. Unfortunately, the DCFS system is not set up to help the innocent lives these women bring into the world. My daughter has used her children for goods and services their entire lives. She has stated she won’t be like me, they will be allowed to use drugs. It took me many years of counseling to break the cycle of codependency. I missed many family and friends’ events because I held on to guilt and shame that was not my burden. I went to Alanon. I rationalized “it was a disease” When my last counselor asked me if she had tuberculosis would I allow her around my home and other family members is when the lightbulb went off. Yes, she has a disease however I no longer blame myself. I truly let go and let God. She is in His hands. I know I didn’t cause it, I can’t cure it and I can’t control it. So now after three years of no contact and serenity, I have the tools to deal with the newest addict in my life. Thank you for this well written, thought provoking book. I will be going back through the questions many times. I may even attempt to write my own story. It’s reassuring to know none of us, with addicts we love, are not alone.
