Damn it, Charlotte, I haven’t been drinking much at all in the past few years. Can’t you just give me a break for one night?” Caroline saw Charlotte put her hands on her hips and walk closer to John. She knew her mother was mad. “John, once an alcoholic, always an alcoholic. You know that!” Charlotte voice was loud, and she was obviously furious. Just then, John raised his arm and hit Charlotte across the face with the back of his hand. She fell backward, and her head hit the coffee table. She lay on the floor, stunned. When she sat up, blood ran down her face from the gash in her head. “Oh, my God, Charlotte! What have I done? Oh, my God.” Caroline watched the entire scene in horror. She rushed into the library and screamed at her father, “Please don’t hurt mama. Daddy, why did you hit mama?” Just then, Belle came into the library and saw Charlotte bleeding. “Robert—Robert, get the car; we are going to the hospital,” Belle shouted. “I tripped over the coffee table and fell. That’s all I remember, Belle,” Charlotte said. “Okay, honey, let’s get you to the hospital,” Belle said. Robert was waiting with the car in the portico when John helped Charlotte to the back seat. He got in the back with her, and Robert sped down the driveway to the hospital.

About the Book

About the Author
Susan is an Atlanta native with deep southern roots in Georgia. She is nostalgic about Atlanta in the 1950’s and 1960’s and has tried to give her readers a glimpse of this beautiful city while following a family of very strong women. The extraordinary changes are chronicled in both her books through her love of history. Susan lives in a suburb of North Atlanta.
