Bobby's Song 2

As I look at her, I remembered how when we were kids I thought she looked like ‘Mary Anne’ on Gilligan’s Island…so pretty and wholesome. Here I am now watching (what I think will be), the last moments of her life. Watching her being thrown around like an old rag doll. The look on her face, as he pulled her up from the floor and punched her on the back of the head about tore my heart out.

Instantly her eyes got as wide as a deer’s; just as your headlights catch it crossing the road. Then they roll back in her head showing only the white part…at that very moment her death happened. She went limp and fell to the floor, only to have Mike pick her up again, fist clenched ready to pummel her once more…till he realized she was dead. Here he is, this six-foot, two hundred and twenty-pound, ex-high school jock treating her like dirty laundry…boy, this makes me so mad. Then he let her fall to the floor and stood over her in silence for a few moments.

What he did next made both Bob and I so angry I wanted to reach through time and space and kill him with my bare hands. He went to the fridge and grabbed another beer, lit an unfiltered Camel and sat in his Lay Z boy recliner…and just stared at her lying there. After a few more Camels and ‘another’ beer, he got up went over to her and took off all her clothes and placed her in the tub and turned the shower on. He cleaned up all of his mess, (beer cans and ashtrays) then sat back down in his chair, called the police and waited for them to arrive.

It was then that I remembered the story my Mother told me she had seen in the newspapers. The papers said, ‘That she had slipped and fell in the tub while taking a shower. He did not hear anything because he was sleeping.’ When the family and everybody that knew that asshole figured the truth really was; he was passed out from being drunk or maybe he beat her up… This of course is what really happened. I remember how her father and brothers thought that’s what had happened to her as well.
