Chopped Chicken Livers
When
one's had
filet mignon,
one
hates to eat
only
chopped chicken livers.
When
one's had
courtbouillon,
it’s tough
to dine
only
on
chopped hamburger.
When
one's had
champagne of the finest vintage,
it’s
difficult, indeed,
to drink
rotgut liquor,
when
one’s known
a man
par excellence,
it’s
impossible
to adore
un homme ordinaire.
The Mermaid’s Lament
Whiskers on his chin,
he’s a fisherman
now and then,
He claims to understand
the workings of the fishy mind,
All, save mine, save mine.
He lives down by the water
and watches boats
as if by order,
He tells seafood lies
and smiles
in all the mermaid eyes,
save mine, save mine.
the hearts of all fishy races, All, save mine, save mine.
He even kisses with his mouth,
every little bass and trout,
He kisses all the faces
and even other places,
All, save mine, save mine.
I won’t toss my love into the waves before me,
or fling it away to sharks on some deep sea line,
No, I’ll Save mine, save mine, save mine!

About the Author
Joan Hough Harrington, a former assistant professor in the communication, psychology, and education departments at LSU in Shreveport, wrote and produced a series of award-winning radio programs and children’s theatre productions. Twice a widow, she has lived coast to coast, but now resides in Spring, Texas.
