Many many years ago, on the Lower East Side,
most people were poor and took each day in stride.
Everyone came from all walks of life.
They struggled and worked and had hardship and strife.
The poor, the desperate, the hopeful came pouring in
each striving for a better life than the one they
tearfully left behind along with kin.
After a stormy troublesome voyage upon a raging sea,
at last they reached the longed for Statue of Liberty.

Florence Kertes was born on Lewis Street in New York City on The Lower East Side. She continues to reside on The Lower East Side not far from where her childhood began. Her hobby is writing poetry about life as she sees it.
