I needed a minute. I wanted to run to the bathroom and access the damage but the healing wound in my right groin still throbbed and oozed blood, so I walked very gingerly. Actually, it was more like a shaking shuffle. When I finally looked up into the mirror, a complete stranger stared back at me. She was bald, thin but puffy (from steroids), pale and frail. Her eyes looked distant, as if she was lost, with no particular destination in mind. She was sad, depressed, despondent, lonely, mad, angry and ugly. Yes, I said it, UGLY. I didn’t know this woman and I didn’t want to know her. Her life appeared way too empty yet too complicated. I wanted her to go away. Tears streamed down this foreigner’s face and just as I looked around to find something to break the mirror so that I could remove this image from being imprinted in my mind, my daughters joined me on either side, and Kirsten said, “Mommy, it’s OK. Now put your bandana on and don’t look at it anymore.” I did as I was told. Sleep did not come easily for me that night. That was a turning point for me but it took me awhile to realize.

Dr. Sheri Prentiss is a board-certified occupational and environmental medicine physician. She is a breast cancer survivor. Dr. Prentiss is the proprietor of PrimaDonnaMD Designs, a line of apparel inspired by her lymphedema compression garments. She is a native of Chicago, Illinois.
