Leading Your Employees So many organizations forget that employees overall do wish to do a great job for their employer. Unfortunately, there is so often a disconnect between the employer's wants and needs and employees. Employees need to know that they are in fact achieving what the employer needs them to do and be valued. This so often can be presented in mere praise at a staff meeting. Take the time to praise employees even if you are only partway to the organization's or team's goal. I'm reminded of Nelson Mandela, former President of South Africa. When he took over, he could have so easily said, now is the time for revenge to make up for all the past injustices done to so many of his fellow countrymen. But no, he wanted to make his country great. To do so he knew he would need the help of all the people and so that is what he did - worked with the very people who imprisoned and enslaved him. And so today, we see that South Africa continues to go through a cleaning, a healing, but is no doubt on the road to greatness because of his ability to build a great team! The lesson for your own team organization is that you have got to work with people, your peers, to achieve the mission of completing the work. Yes, often under tremendous constraints, but a noble cause to provide quality serves to your customer base. I have coined 4 C's that I also follow through my professional life: Conscientiousness: about work. I want to present the best I can to the job at hand. Communication: open - whether verbal or written, credibility and accessibility are important facets of a true professional. Consistency of Collaboration: When I work with my team, my peers, my internal and external customers, it is incumbent to treat everyone as equally as you can. To leave the impression that everyone has a "fair shot" at receiving the appropriate guidance and assistance. Commitment: I think of the term "follow-through" and I also think of the term "commitment" - the two being intrinsically linked.

Ellen E. Grant, a successful black businesswoman, expands on the ideas she introduced in her first book, Managing in Black and White, in this self-help guide to marketing yourself to succeed in the business world.

Ellen E. Grant was born and raised in Buffalo, New York. She earned a bachelor of arts, master of social work and doctorate degree from the State University of New York at Buffalo. She has more than twenty-five years of experience in the health, behavioral health, and the academic fields. She is also the author of Managing in Black and White.
