Harris stood in the doorway to the bedroom for just a minute trying to make sense of it all.
“I think you want the bedroom down the hall,” a man in a white suit that covered him head to toe had turned from what he was doing and tried to send Harris on his way.
“What?” Harris couldn’t pull his eyes away from the body that was hanging from the ceiling fan.
“Bedroom down the hall, man,” the man said, “you can’t help this one. She’s been gutted.”
“Right,” Harris managed to say, wading through his shock, “bedroom down the hall, I’m on it.”
He wheeled the gurney in the direction the man had pointed almost relieved to be leaving whatever it was he’d walked into.
“Whoa, someone was having a bad day!” he commented to himself.
As he turned the corner he had to make passage to get the gurney through, “Coming through!”
Men in black parted to let him through. He started to enter the doorway to the bedroom and noticed the blood and brains that were splattered on the wall. He looked a little further and saw the blood that was everywhere Ferguson was in the bedroom.
“Whoa, let’s upgrade that to a really, really bad day! You all know where this guy is, right?” Harris asked looking back over his shoulder at cops. They seemed to be ignoring him.
Harris took no notice as he brought the gurney closer to where Ferguson was kneeling in the blood which he was pretty much covered in by now thanks to the thrashing of the female victim.
“Glad you’re here,” Ferguson said, “I haven’t been able to get anything started on her, she keeps thrashing, and it’s all I can do to keep her from hurting herself more.”
“Need a bite block?” Harris asked, searching through his equipment bag and pulling one out.
“Harris,” Ferguson said, with just a little irritation sounding in his voice, “Look at her.”
Harris stopped what he was doing and looked …I mean really looked.
“Oh,” he said almost sheepishly, “my bad.” And then he made a point to gingerly place the bite block back in the bag.
“No big deal,” Ferguson said, still restraining the patient, “But be careful with her, okay? I don’t think it’s a seizure. I think she’s in pain, or frightened, maybe both. We need to get her on the board and get her out of here. I’m sure Jacobs has the male patient ready for transport already. I can’t put the collar on her without potential damage to the surrounding tissue, but, if you can help me get her on the board, we can immobilize her head by strapping her forehead down once she’s on the gurney.”

About the Author
Robin Geesman grew up and raised her family on the California coast. After earning a degree in Respiratory Therapy, she began her career with Catholic Healthcare West, St. Joseph’s Hospital, specializing in long-term artificial life support/ventilator care. Robin now lives in Louisiana, where she continues to write.
