Holding On

I am a baby rhinoceros living on African lands
On the black market my horn is a demand
Daily our numbers lessen
From the poaching industries progression
They profit from our horn
A part of us which we are born
The keratin inside my horn they use
They believe their health it improves
For a Chinese tradition so old
My horn is worth more than gold
These cruel acts are a crime
The death toll climbs
Driven by financial gain
This is not humane
On our land poachers roam
The place we call home
Unable to see well makes it easy for poachers to attack
They come in a pack
With a dart they shoot my mommy down
Her horn is their crown
Time they race
As they saw off her face
She is left for dead
For a short time she lives in agony instead
For two days she walks
The vultures in the air flock
I stay close by her side
I let her guide
She finally falls to the ground
I hear not a sound
Over her dead body I hover
I have lost my mother
Forever I will mourn
She was stripped of her horn
Because my mommy died
I will not survive
Already the black rhinoceros is extinct
This industry is linked
We will be next on the list
And will no longer exist
