I looked at a cut on his hand that was jagged red and screaming with infection. I walked around him and from the back of the wagon pulled out a jar of ointment and a bandage. I turned back to the Sheriff and put my hand out to his hand. He stared at me as if he was assessing my intent. I huffed, grabbed his hand, and put the ointment on the cut and then the bandage. As I finished the task I commented "Even the tree people know to keep a cut clean."
The Sheriff looked at his hand and I advised as I put the jar in his hand "Put the ointment on it again tonight and tomorrow and the cut will be healed."
"Thank you Ma'am. But what about the Moonshine?" Assessing his new bandage and the jar.
"That will be ten cents." Holding out my upturned palm for payment.
He stared at me, and then he reached into his pocket and handed me my ten cents to my outreached hand. "Ma'am, the moonshine?"
