In a time long since passed into forgotten legend, there was a vast island full of magic and beauty. High mountains dominated the west and the south, while beautiful meadows spread in the east as far as the eye could see. The north held breath taking cliffs of white stone and thick, emerald green forests on each of its tiered plateaus. This unaltered place of natural beauty was home to some of the most important creatures in history, nature’s greatest allies, the elves. In time, their beloved island became known as the land of Akélian.
Their great love and passion for nature prompted the earth to gift them with incredible magical gifts, but with these gifts came a vitally important purpose. They were each given a special aura, or “light”. Their aura was a direct extension of their souls, and they became spiritually linked with the flow of nature. Delighted by their abilities and their close relationship to nature, the elves gladly embraced their gifts.
To celebrate their great love of the land, five sacred kingdoms were built in different corners of Akélian. These magnificent kingdoms were created to worship and embrace the wonder of a certain element of nature.
Solaurhia in the east paid its tremendous respect to the warm, life giving sun. The ancient elves chose the seemingly endless grasslands as the perfect place to worship the sun. No trees or mountains were present to block out the brilliant sunlight. Elves that were given the gift of the yellow light loved to call this kingdom their own. Yellow lights are very bright and cheery elves that have the ability to bring happiness to the hearts of everyone around them. These elves have a very special love of the warmth of the sun, and some have strong enough abilities to capture the rays of the sun, using them for whatever nature needs.
The rolling mountains in the south became home to the very special kingdom of Rhodarion. This kingdom celebrated the powerful and dangerous element of fire. The stubborn, passionate red lights found the high mountains and dormant volcano to be where they belonged. The elves believed that fire represented not only the ability to destroy, but the gift of rebirth. Red lights are very stubborn and manipulative, and they command the ability to manipulate the emotions of those around them. A red light is not an elf to cross or anger. Some very gifted red lights can hold fire in their hands and command it to do their bidding.
The beauty of a well concealed forest speaks volumes to the green light elves. The thick forests and cliffs of the north is where they built Aléodyn, the kingdom of earth and forest. A green light elf can be nearly impossible to find if he does not wish to be found, and the cliffs of Aléodyn made them completely disappear behind the thick canopy of emerald green forest. Green lights have a wonderful gift with words and can solve nearly any conflict, if you can catch them to ask for their advice. The very best of the green lights are said to be able to talk to the trees and bushes, earning their loyalty and trust. A tree can be a very powerful ally.
Mer Anémos was a gorgeous kingdom built to celebrate the tranquil, ever changing element of water. It was set upon a vast bay in the south-east, hundreds of miles wide. The blue lights were sea going elves by nature, and ancient elves developed Mer Anémos on the clear water of the bay to be as close to this element as possible. Elves gifted with the blue light were exceptionally powerful, the second most powerful in existence. Yet, despite their powerful gifts, they were very calm and passive creatures. They used their abilities to protect rather than to destroy. They had the ability to shield those that they loved from emotional pain and upset. They could take the pain of another being and bear it themselves, a sacrifice that most of them were willing to make. Blue lights were very loving creatures, but they also had the curse of caring too much. Jealousy and a possessive nature plagued these elves tremendously. The most powerful blue lights could manipulate water, and could even turn it to ice or steam at will.
Black lights are rarely seen, but very well known. These creatures dwell in the shadows of the world and the darkness of the night. Most black lights are selfish, cold, and cruel. They will use any means to get what they desire. Staying as far away from black lights is a small piece of advice that most elves hear many times in their lifetime. These dark creatures were not gifted with a kingdom to celebrate the darkness of the world. It is said that they wander the forgotten mountains in the west, cursed to remain lonely rogues for their entire lives.
Lumaneire is the most important kingdom of all, and will never be found on a map of Akélian. It is home to the most powerful beings in existence, the white lights. The pure light and magic of these creatures, with the help of some very special friends, ensures that the sacred kingdom is never in the same place twice. The eyes of human beings never met the sacred ground, and only a handful of elves know the secrets to finding this magical place. White lights are incredibly powerful, yet incredibly rare. Only three white lights ever exist at one time. These elves are extremely caring, compassionate, and empathetic. They can sense the emotions of those around them, including plants and animals. White lights also carry a very special gift, the ability to heal.
The elves of the five kingdoms share the same morals and values in life. They all have a very close relationship with the spirit of nature and a great passion for keeping the earth a beautiful, healthy place. Each of these wondrous realms has a separate, wonderfully enriching culture and fascinating way of life. The legends of the elvish culture are sometimes shared by all of the elvish kingdoms, and sometimes belong to just one specific kingdom. Whatever the case may be, the legends of elvish culture are told time and time again in all the kingdoms of Akélian.
These stories are tales that have been told to elvish children for thousands of years, and are stories that helped to shape the elvish culture and way of life. These beloved legends are just a few of the tales that captured the hearts and imaginations of elvish children, and adults alike.
