HOW TO BE INTENTIONAL IN CREATING YOUR PERSONAL BRAND
You are in control of the experiences you create. And, as such, it is important to step up and be deliberate in shaping your brand.
Start by defining a vision of what you want, who you are, and how you want to be perceived. From there, align your behavior to reflect the perception you want to create, and make adjustments when your behavior doesn’t align with your brand. Consider the following tools that shape your brand:
Words. Your language carries energy, and reveals how you feel about yourself. Strong decisive leaders use positive words, speak with purpose, and don't use fillers like ums and ahs and winding sentences. Transparent, authentic leaders share information and take full accountability for their choices.
Actions. When you have defined who you want to be, and what keywords exemplify your brand, it’s time to bring those words to life with action. In other words: you need to walk your talk. When you commit to, say, being an approachable, patient CEO, you don’t want to brush people off, or respond gruffly when you speak to others—and if you’re passionate about an issue, you need to get involved and support it.
The experience you create. Walking your talk. The way you dress. The energy you project. Your conversations, whether you are gossiping or sharing a win you and your team have accomplished. Everything you do and say, especially as you climb higher in the ranks, is being evaluated more closely. People make judgments based on snap shots of you. These can all subtly influence the way people view you, and all influence the path you can take in an organization.
