Lloyd Wigginton was summarizing the postmortem findings when I reached the end of the chart and came to the registration page. I stared unseeing at it, and pictured this information being gathered by a clerk from a tearful family, while their wife and mother lay smashed and bleeding beyond the double doors. A young life lost. It didn't have to happen. If you'd been alert, or if you'd even had your seatbelt fastened. As I closed the patient record my eyes swept the boxes for Admitting Physician and Private Physician. Harvey Preisler. Miles Warner. I handed the chart back. Discussion wound down, Zoltan picked up the next case, and now, I thought, we all forget about Annemarie Higgenbotham. I was wrong. I would have cause to remember her.

About the Book

About the Author
Gordon R. Kelly is a graduate of Princeton University and Yale University School of Medicine, and received post-graduate training at The Buffalo General Hospital and the Institute of Ophthalmology of the Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center in New York. He and his wife Barbara Caird Kelly have three adult children, and live in Rutland, Vermont, where he practiced for thirty-five years.
