Lowell Fiffer called me at ten, early for Lowell. “What happened to the envelope with the cigar money?” “I overheard some things, but since I was kept outside, I really don’t know what happened to the envelope,” I said. “I want the information about it immediately. Fax me a report now,” Lowell demanded with irritation in his voice. “All I know is that Kitty, the blonde, and Sandy, the dark-skinned girl, were involved in some way.” I kept an even tone to settle Lowell down. “Fax that report ASAP. It was five thousand dollars of cigar money that should’ve been in my pocket,” Lowell demanded in his Scarsdale accent. “Hey, Lowell, why’d you give the order for the managers to keep me outside? I can’t see what’s happening inside if I’m made to stand outside.” Lowell didn’t answer my question and remained silent on the phone, so I continued. “If you want me to do some good down there, I need to be inside the club.” “Okay, I’ll tell the managers to let you go inside sometimes but also work the front door outside,” Lowell said. I let the “outside” question slide. Why would Lowell want me on the outside when everything was happening inside?

About the Author
Bruce Alterman is the former Director of the Associated Licensed Detectives of New York State (ALDONYS). He is a 4th generation private investigator with over 30 years in the field. Currently, he manages internal security and executive protection for a Wall Street investment firm. Additionally, he conducts legal aid investigations for public defenders.
