Chapter 1 A lone logging truck rumbling along the main street of Diboll, Texas provided the only sound piercing the quiet of a slow, hot summer afternoon smothering that small East Texas town. Caroline Bailey, dreaming over the tabloids at Sanders Grocery, wistfully wished for some customers to come through her checkout stand, at least, to pass the time of day. As she glanced out through Sanders’s window plastered with specials on ribs, Tide, and Charmin, a black Mercedes parked head-in in front of the store. A mature man in a white linen suit, white shirt, and bright red tie caught her full, undivided attention when he entered the store. Her stare followed his confident stroll through Aisle 4, where he paused at the Frito display, selected nothing, and continued to the cooler in the rear. When he arrived with a Dr. Pepper at her stand, he smiled brightly as he handed her a twenty. Caroline saw her future. “What brought you to Diboll?” she asked. She carefully placed his change in his hand, but her gaze never left his tanned face. “Fate,” he said as he searched her eyes. “Whose?” She wet her lips. “We’ll see at supper,” Thomas Morgan promised.

This fascinating novel grabs and holds the readers attention page after page, as Caroline Morgan, world-class jet-setter, beauty, and corporate executive struggles to escape the grasp of mobster Angelo Gambretti. He has threatened to drug her, put her to work in one of his whorehouses, and then kill her, if her dead ex-husband’s corporation fails to continue laundering money from his casinos and whorehouses.
Caroline conducts a no-holds-barred campaign for the help of Will Eaton, a powerful Houston lawyer, on week-ends in his remote East Texas cabin, and in his bed. Eaton enjoys her persuasive techniques, but absolutely refuses to be involved in the money laundering operation.
The cabin is located in the piney woods on Farm to Market Road 127 in Cherokee County. The sheriff of Cherokee County considers Caroline a suspect in the death of her ex-husband who was found murdered in Rusk, the location of one of her plants. She becomes active in the county politics, where she has a small iron ore plant, and plots to use the sheriff’s forces to eliminate Gambretti.

About the Author
Louis Leon has a degree in civil engineering from Texas A&M and and studied novel writing for four years in Rice University’s Continuing Education Program. He is a retired vice president of an international engineering and construction company. He has previously published two novels—Congress Avenue and Portraits in Oil. He and his recently deceased wife are lifelong Texans and have three daughters. Louis currently resides in Houston, Texas.
