It was late January 1943. The last rays of the winter sun could barely be seen through the huge conference room window at Hitler’s mountain retreat high in the Bavarian Alps.
Major Karl Strassburg, a twenty-five-year-old ex-Fallschirmjäger—holder of the Knight’s Cross with Oak Leaves and Swords, an award equivalent to the US Medal of Honor—entered the vast meeting room to present his Führer with details of a fantastic new weapon, a weapon signaling the dawn of a new age, the age of the atom. The Reich had two of these weapons, bombs so powerful that just one could level—virtually vaporize—a large city. And if used against the United States, President Roosevelt, due to the public outcry, would have no choice but to pull America out of the war—something the armies of the Reich couldn’t accomplish using its arsenal of conventional weapons. However, if the Reich failed to get the United States out of the war within the next seven months, it would lose the war sometime in the early months of 1945.
There was just one problem: in 1943, Germany didn’t have a bomber with sufficient range to fly even one way nonstop across the Atlantic, let alone one that could carry a nine thousand-pound bomb.
