At early dawn, a 1968 blue Monaco with a black hardtop plowed westward down the dirt road nearly obliterated by snowdrifts. The back window and one of the back doors consisted of duct taped plastic to keep out the blustery elements. The intoxicated driver’s vision was nearly obscured by the ferocious ground drifting and the snow flurries. He had everything he could do to keep the vehicle on the road and moving. Finally, he approached a spot where the snow had blown clear of the road. The driver tromped down on the gas. He gained speed as he came to the top of a hill, forgetting completely there was a turn just beyond. The car careened into a ravine, landed and rolled four times before coming to rest. For a brief minute, there was a lot of noise. The crunching of metal, breaking of glass and last vibrations of the engine before it went dead. The sounds of the machine obliterated the sound of bodies hitting the frozen earth. Then there was a moaning, a child’s whimper and then it was silent. The only sounds were the whistling of the winter wind across the prairie. It was if nature had won the battle over man and his machine, and now could return to control of the prairie.

About the Book
A car accident on a Sioux Reservation leaves a young boy and his siblings homeless.They are sent to live on a farm, where his much older stepbrother is recuperating from war injuries. Clarence only agrees to move because of his brothers and sisters for whom he has been the main caregiver would otherwise be split up for placement.
He finds it difficult to adjust. He never did well in school and hates it. He has trouble with cultural changes, new people and situation; but mostly, the stack of rules. His old life; though not the best, was a life he understood. He will give it a chance, nut seriously considers running away.
About the Author
P J Hoge grew up in Washington and North Dakota. She worked as a Cytotechnologist while living on a farm in central North Dakota until the mid-1980's when she relocated to Nevada. PJ is the author of the Prairie Preacher series.
