WAY PAST VISITING HOURS For a moment they stood motionless, staring at each other. The doctor moved first, turning and fixing Wukich with his oil-black eyes. “I’m Dr. Garcia,” he said. His gaze went to the infant. “I’ll only be a moment with the baby. You can wait—” By the time their eyes met again Wukich was backpedaling to the door. After three steps, he turned to run, but he slammed into the edge of the door with his forehead and reeled sideways. Cradling the baby in his right arm away from the man, he groped for the open doorway. Yet even as he stumbled forward he knew he wouldn’t make it, and he wrapped his other arm around the baby like a fullback going for a goal-line stand. As he fell to the floor from the weight of the man pushing and clawing at him, all he could hear was his high-school football coach screaming, “Cover the goddamn ball!” And he did. There was no way the baby was coming out of his arms. . . . He curled up on the floor against the wall like a frightened armadillo, but he didn’t care. A metal tray crashed against the exposed portion of his head. He clenched his jaw and curled up tighter. Then there were voices outside the door. . . .
