BEYOND HUNTING AND FISHING

... . the five of us proceeded across a meadow, across the main river and over to Silver Salmon Creek. This was a beautiful creek, with deep, winding holes. The four of us spread out on the creek. Casey caught the first fish and from then on we all caught, hooked and lost fish for the next two hours. I caught a large Silver and then had two break water and snap my line! I apparently had the drag set too tight. Casey was fishing next to me as I watched him hook a huge Silver. Then someone yelled "bear!" Poor Casey. He didn't know whether to wrestle the bear or give up the fish. The bear won, the fish got away and he came running over to the rest of us. . . . I could see all of the actions going on at the whale boat, but the boat appeared to still be upside down. It was hard to believe that none of those rescuing the crew of the whale boat could not see me struggling in the water . . . . . . Theodore Roosevelt records the lions charging him in a modest way. Having hunted dangerous game in Africa, I know how frightening some animals can be. Before he left on the Safari, his old enemy, J.P. Morgan said: "America hopes that evey lion will do its duty."
