Picking Up The Pieces

Three-and-a-half years after going through a painful divorce, I thought it would be therapeutic to write about it. I hoped that others also might gain insight through this book and find comfort in seeing that they are not alone. As a professional counselor, I work with couples, families, and individuals, and I have met with other people who are going through or have gone through a divorce. While it is not always appropriate for a therapist to disclose information about herself, on some occasions it is. I have found that on the few occasions when I shared that I too had gone through a divorce, it helped my clients to know that they are not alone. I know people have to work through grief, depression, shame, guilt and many others feelings. I found that since I have personally experienced this, I can better connect with my clients and help them move forward and create a new life, as I did for myself. Toward the end of this book, after sharing my own story, I also present a diverse set of interviews from seven other people who also have taken the journey through divorce. As you will see, the details are different for everyone, but you’ll find some common themes for this experience as well.
