Then suddenly, a cold presence ran up Lace’s spinal cord, making hairs on his legs stand up. At that instant, he heard a deep, angered voice curse from behind him. “What of love!” it cried, startling Lace. Then the voice was in front of him. “Love is a useless tool humans don’t know how to use!” Then from everywhere around him, a voice called out, “Love is nothing but a poisoned rose; eventually, it will wither, leaving the soil dry and not reusable ever again!”
Lace felt as if he had entered hell and opened the door of love. How can emotions so pleasing anger a fleshless creature so much? He wondered. More involved with the conversation than with the drama he was causing to this powerful entity, Lace continued to speak freely, as if he were talking to his buddy about the dangers of love. “Why do you despise love so much?” Lace asked.
“Why do you desire it so much,” the creature immediately retorted, “when lovers laugh at you because you have no love, when couples smirk at you as compassion passes you by. Ask yourself, why does love despise you?”
At first, receiving these words tore Lace’s heart into shreds, but as Lace slowly started to realize the truth of these accusations, he attempted to fight the being. “Love is the one thing—” he began.
But he was quickly cut off. “Love is the thing that has tormented you your entire life. Love despises you and laughs every time you search for it. It runs every time you reach for it. Love is not for you, mortal.” The entity spoke in a snickering voice.
Lace’s heart remained shattered but slowly began to mend back into a hardened organ that would eventually despise love. “Perhaps, you are right,” Lace replied.

About the Book
Following the end of a romantic relationship, Lace is miserable and without hope. Longing to love but unable to make love stay, he turns his back on the most important of human emotions. Little does he know that a dark spirit waits in the shadows; through Lace’s bitterness, the dark spirit finds power. Soon, it makes itself known to Lace, who is unable to reject the temptation.
The spirit’s name is Gormant, and he makes Lace a tempting offer. Lace must die to make it happen, but Gormant claims death is the easy part. As a spirit, Lace will be given limitless power to seek revenge on his enemies and on the women who once broke his heart. Thirsty for payback, Lace agrees to Gormant’s terms, and the bloodbath begins.
Only too late does Lace discover there’s a human who truly loves him. By the time he learns of her feelings, though, Lace is too far under Gormant’s influence to escape. Servant must battle master in order to stop a murderous rampage that will threaten the woman Lace now loves. Lace thought his humanity was gone, but by clinging to the love of a living, breathing woman, his lingering human feelings might be his greatest weapon.
