"How many times have you been broke?" Steve asked, his eyes on the view of the gardens beyond the window.
"Baby, I owned it all once, and I don't even know where it went." She paused. "Yes, I do. I guess you have to be an all time idiot to go through twenty million bucks before you're forty. Today, I can't put my hand on a single dime. I've nothing left." She looked around the room. "I've sold almost everything. The Renoirs, the Rivera's and all but one fur to pay back taxes."
She slipped her fist into her other hand. "I was a money fountain and everyone came around for a long, cool drink. My mother, my father, my sister, not to mention the keepers on the funny farms when I had to go there." She braced herself against the table. "Well, the hungry relatives are all gone now. There's only Iris and myself left."

About the Author
Jerry Jaffe, award-winning writer, traveler and professor, is conversant in five languages. He now lives in suburban Chicago with his wife and Afghan hound. They have one child and two grandchildren. He has written material for the US Army, and a one-act play for the music director of a popular cruise ship line.
