“Even a blind squirrel finds an acorn every now and then,” - a proverb we have all heard one time or another. I think this is wonderful way of saying, “sometime it’s just dumb luck.” Sometimes, fishermen can find acorns. Bill was fairly new to fly-fishing at the time. For over an hour he worked a pool he was convinced held trout. I stood and watched him fish the pool for a while. Finally Bill was ready to give up and move on. “Bill,” I said, “let me show you how to mend the line in order to get a better drift.” He handed me his rod; I cast to the center of the pool and said, “Bill if you mend your line by flipping some line upstream, it will create slack giving you a drag-free drift.” As I talked, I threw an upstream mend in the line. The fly floated perfectly down the center of the pool. We watched the fly bounce along down the center of the pool, and suddenly, a beautiful brook trout rose from the bottom and sucked in Bill’s Humpy. I instinctively set the hook. Realizing I had Bill’s rod, I quickly handed the rod back to him with some embarrassment. I found another acorn that day; it was on that day Bill nicknamed me, “The Professor.”
