DECISION RECESS: ANY TIME YOU FIND YOURSELF CONFRONTED BY AN EMOTIONALLY-CHARGED SITUATION WHERE YOUR FIRST INCLINATION IS TO REACT WITH AN EMOTIONAL REACTION, STOP AND TAKE A DECISION RECESS. THIS IS SIMPLY A COOLING-OFF PERIOD FOR YOUR MIND AND BODY WHERE YOU DO YOUR BEST TO DIVERT YOUR THOUGHTS TO ANY OTHER TOPIC OR IDEA FOR A PERIOD OF TIME. IF AT ALL POSSIBLE PHYSICALLY LEAVE THE AREA SO THAT YOU CAN CLEAR THE COBWEBS IN YOUR HEAD. THIS COOLING OFF PERIOD MAY BE FIVE MINUTES TO A DAY OR MORE DICTATED BY THE GRAVITY AND EMOTION INVOLVED. DISCUSS YOUR FEELINGS WITH SOMEONE YOU TRUST IF YOU FEEL THEIR INPUT WOULD HELP. YOU WANT TO STRIVE TOWARDS A RESPONSE AS OPPOSED TO AN EMOTIONAL REACTION IF AT ALL POSSIBLE. DO YOUR VERY BEST TO RESPOND AND NOT REACT IN THIS TYPE OF SITUATION. NOW AFTER YOU HAVE HAD THE TIME TO COOL DOWN DURING YOUR DECISION RECESS, YOU CAN ARRIVE AT A DECISION WHICH WILL MEAN YOU WILL BE MAKING A RESPONSIBLE, WELL THOUGHT OUT DECISION AS OPPOSED TO A REACTIONARY/SHOOT FROM THE HIP EMOTIONAL DECISION.

According to author Dan Gates, decisionology is the analysis, study, discussion, and exampling of the decisions that may determine the direction of your life. We put so much emphasis on the decisions and choices that high-school students are making and will continue to make for the rest of their lives because these choices can potentially create— or destroy—a bright future.
Decisionology is designed to be a simple and effective resource that can be used whenever challenges or decisions arise. This guide does not provide the answers required in a given situation; rather, it explains the many different types of decisions that are available and the potential consequences that each may bring.

D A N I E L P. GAT E S received his BS degree in business administration from the University of Montana with a teaching certificate in business education. He owned an insurance brokerage, received numerous salesmanship awards for excellence from various businesses, and has one son, Seane. Dan enjoys horses, 4 star movies, Fly Fishing and lives in Missoula, Montana.
