One thing you need is congruence. You must agree with yourself. By that I mean congruence between the three basic activities in life – thinking, saying, and doing. If what you think, what you say, and what you do are all in agreement then there will be a sense of peace and contentment. If any activity is incongruent there will be a sense of incompleteness, deception, and a lack of fulfillment. Practice what you preach.
I believe that there is no greater force in the world than love. So I say -- love. Make it a verb. Make it something you do. Love everybody and everything. Nobody ever went wrong by loving too much. But many people regret not having loved enough.
I heard a preacher one time delivering a sermon on giving. He said to give. He said to then keep giving until it hurt. Then he said to keep on giving until it didn’t hurt anymore. He was right. And the same is true for love. Love, like giving, becomes a habit. Love trumps pain. After awhile the pain goes away and only love remains.
Don't respond to people and situations based on your human nature, but rather respond based on The Golden Rule. Now here is the gold in the rule – you are going to feel wonderful about you! When you see that person in the mirror tomorrow morning you’re going to love them. You’re going to love them for who they are, what they did, and what they are becoming. And you will be proud. And everyone that knows you will be proud of you.
Helping people will become a habit. I suggest that you start by trying to help someone with something every day. Maybe it’s just emptying the dishwasher; or cleaning your room; or cutting the grass; or studying with a friend; or loaning somebody lunch money at school; it could be anything you choose. As you get older you will have many more options from which to choose. You can volunteer to work at hospitals, libraries, or nursing homes. You can get involved with charitable organizations like the Red Cross, Habitat for Humanity, the Salvation Army, or any number of organizations that are important to you.
