My grandpa often spoke negatively of those who drank whiskey. My grandfather often told me stories about the “sorry” sharecroppers who made moonshine (often called liquor, hooch, mountain dew, or other names). He spoke of how sharecroppers sold illegal alcohol during Prohibition. He spoke of the “hell-bound” sellers of moonshine. My grandpa told me that it was not only immoral, but also dangerous because of the way it was made. He said moonshine often contained toxic alcohols such as methanol. He spoke of evil men like Al Capone and Joseph Kennedy who had made a fortune controlling bootlegging, production, and distribution of alcohol to sleazy establishments called speakeasies (blind pigs or blind tigers). As far as my grandpa was concerned, none of us were going to be involved in anything like that as long as he was around. Even then, I wondered what I might have done to make money if I were the man of the house. Would I have sold illegal whiskey to feed my family? I can’t say. I simply don’t know what I might have done to provide food for my family.

About the Book
Author Lester Nuby Jr. began life in a dilapidated house in Bell Springs Mountain, Alabama, but now he is a successful businessman who doesn’t have to worry about money. It wasn’t easy for Nuby to scrounge his way out of poverty, a task made more difficult by the fact that his father was murdered just five months before he was born.

Lester Nuby Jr. is a businessman who has run local, national, and international corporations. Through his writing, he seeks to make people realize that poverty is a circumstance and not a choice. He lives in Birmingham, Alabama, with his wife, Dr. Jacqueline Freeman Nuby. They have three children.
