Dying Education: Necessary Reformation. The Nigerian Case

Most of Nigerian schools are understaffed, especially schools located in remote towns and villages. Teachers shy away from going to remote or local towns and villages to pick up appointments or postings; some do not even apply to such areas. Enough time should be taken to create incentives to attract teachers to such inner places. Other minor factors to understaffing of schools include lack of accommodation, towns and villages posing difficult situations, notorious and cultic schools or institutions. The problem is that when a teacher or lecturer does not possess the requisite knowledge, students under such teachers suffer. Not only that these students are deprived of the right knowledge, they are incapable of passing any external examination. Such students are continually subjected to unending extra lessons as a result of missing requisite knowledge. When the required academic background is not present, a student cannot go beyond the impacted knowledge. Teacher education is one other major area where attention is not given by the government who should establish such programmes for quality education. Teachers at all levels of education are not motivated to excel and update themselves to deliver more current issues in the classroom. Under funding of schools/institutions have created enormous problems in the education sector and something needs to be done to truly address this matter. Poverty in Nigeria has maimed the formation of the mind and the motivation towards education. Many Nigerians wallow in abject poverty, unable to meet up with needs such as food, shelter, clothing medical services, good drinking water, education, and transport. The relationship between poverty and its intractable hunger to education is a zero tolerance. The society is besieged with poor education, no leadership, money bag politics and high rate of unemployment. These ills account for the social malfunction and disintegration of the society. Man is a bundle of possibility, and the awful situation in the country has left the society infested with multifaceted crimes and inhuman activities viz., bombing, kidnapping, killings, insurrections, prostitution, human trafficking, stealing, break down of law and order. The Nigerian nation must tap from its pluralism, and emphasize benefits therein. Together as Nigerians we break through, together we achieve and together we build a strong nation politically, socially, technologically, religiously and economically. Let the pluralistic nature of the country not be a weakness but strength to fathom all problems and jettison as well as incarcerate all hatred. Education is the one and only, and the surest way to attain the goals of nationhood. Education is the greatest of all reforms; reformation of the sector is a sine qua non for Nigeria.
