Darcy walked along a curved walkway. The air was infused the thin rows of pine that seemed to climb up beyond the skyline. As she kept walking, the trees seemed to be closing in on each other until there was no light visible between them. Before she realized it she appeared to be in a maze. He watched as her expression changed when she hit the first dead end. There was always something he found seductive and enticing about mazes. The idea that someone might be lurking around any turn, that someone walked blindly into every corner. He wondered how she’d maneuver through it. The first thing that had attracted him to her was her ability to be cunning and self-assured. He noticed a smile that would crack every time she felt she’d made progress. He chuckled sadistically to himself at the knowledge that there was no way out. He stared at her with appetence. After a while Darcy began to get nervous. Even though she knew she was dreaming, a strange anxiety built up that she might be stuck. She stopped and took in a deep breath, closed her eyes and tried to calm herself down. She was startled when she felt someone caress her arms from behind. It was Jackson it had to be, but she had never been able to feel him in her dreams before. She thought it maybe had something to do with the fact that they had already been intimate and maybe she’d memorized how her body reacted to his touch. But as he put his lips to her neck, something felt wrong. She tried to turn back to see who it was, but as she began to turn, he placed one hand on her collarbone and the other beneath her chin. He couldn't understand why she needed the reassurance and then he got a strange arousal from her resistance. As he kissed her neck she squirmed and although he had all the material to mentally make out in his head what he should be feeling it was still not filling. Darcy tried to wiggle free and the more she tried, the harder he kissed her. She tried to scream, but she had been robbed of her voice. She closed her eyes and with everything she could muster up she was finally able to let escape in a raspy voice a single word. “Jack” The kissing immediately stopped. But the hands did not lift up instead the one that had resting on her collar snaked its way up her neck and forced close around her throat. As the other followed behind, she panicked and frantically began trying to squirm free. It took him a while to figure out what had happened. One minute he was riding a wave of ecstasy and the next a rage had overwhelmed him to the point asphyxiation. He couldn’t believe what he was doing, but as he held her delicate frame in place, he realized he was as equally aroused by the thought of the life seeping out of her body beneath his fingertips as he had been by kissing her. He squeezed tighter and put his face to her cheek to kiss her one last time. He had never loved, but he knew if he ever had the capability it would have been her.

About the Book
Although seventeen-year-old Darcy has always remembered her dreams, she’s never bothered to interpret them beyond writing them down in her journal. But after a date with her boyfriend, Harley, goes horribly wrong, the only thing she wants to do is retreat into them—to the attractive boy she dreams about every night.
Soon, to Darcy’s surprise, she realizes that she is able to communicate with the mysterious dream boy—Jackson, who introduces himself as Jack. Despite everything going on in her waking life, she knows that she is safe with him. As the chemistry grows between them, Darcy and Jack make every effort to be together as often as possible, even if it’s only in their dreams. As their budding romance grows, Darcy learns that Jack has secrets of his own—possibly deadly ones—and she finds herself wondering why he must be away from her for long periods of time. Where does he go? What does he do when he’s gone?
But just when the two decide that the past no longer matters, dark forces in Jack’s life arise and threaten to take Darcy from him forever. Will they be able to overcome them and find a way to be together?

V. Tamez graduated from the University of the Incarnate Word with a degree in business and sciences. She has previously published poetry and several ghostwriting projects. She currently resides in Laredo, Texas, with her family. Lucid Dreams is her first novel.
