The Índalo Man is a curious stick-like figure which has become the symbol of Almería in general, and of Mojácar in particular. He was found inscribed on the walls of the nearby caves of Velez Blanco, and is thought to be at least 6,500 years old. Anywhere you go in Mojácar you will be met by the Índalo Man, although a more stylised version has taken the place of the original drawing. He is the spiritual centre of the village and is regarded with almost religious reverence. Those who live in Mojácar believe he will protect them from lightning and natural disasters and the evil eye in general. Many archaeologists claim that he holds a rainbow over his head, symbolising some sort of pact between men and the gods. I believe that what he touches is the firmament; it is the celestial sphere of which we still speak today. In his arms, he embraces the night.

Tracy Saunders is a clinical psychologist and certified practitioner of hypnosis. She is the author of the novels Pilgrimage to Heresy and St James’ Rooster. Born in Wroughton, England, after 23 years in Canada, she now makes her home in the Costa da Morte, Galicia, Spain.
