“Get in.” The captain nodded toward the sponge-loaded skiffs bucking over the wide wake.
“In the dinghy?” Not believing he really wanted us to climb down into the little boat, I shivered, my bony knees drilling the transom’s weathered teak.
Georgene wasn’t budging.
“If there is trouble, you must not be found,” he insisted.
“Trouble?” Georgene whispered. She still didn’t move.
The roar of the distant engines convinced me. “We should hide, Gene. There’s no other place. Go, just in case.” I tried to push her forward, but she was stalled in first gear, like I was asking her to walk a gangplank into schooling sharks.
“Move,” I hissed into her ear.
Georgene gripped the rail with both hands. She was swaying so much I thought she would fall over. She shook her head, blinking rapidly, even as she hiked one knee up to the rail and whispered, “How are we going to fit in that puny dinghy with all those sponges?”
“They’re coming, Gene!” I pushed her aside. “Snap out of it, would you? Grab the rope, hurry—” I yanked the towline and thrust it into her shaking hands and together we tugged at the line.

About the Book
Eleven-year-old Chad Hatcher was only trying to get proof. No one would believe him without it. He'd spotted some men hauling suspicious looking rocks off a reef near his house in the Florida Keys, and he suspected that the shiny bits of metal embedded in the rocks were pieces of treasure from an ancient shipwreck site. It couldn't be a legal dive site; not that close to a protected reef.
Coming up with a plan to stop the looters before they destroy the reef is simple . . . finding a way to get past his big sister, Georgene, is not. Then when things suddenly go wrong, Chad, and his sister, must scramble for their lives through the backwaters of Sugarloaf Key--with no one to turn to but each other.
