Lover, Art Thou Strong?

Suppose I were a lake, And you were a tree,
What do you think our relationship would be?
Would you vainly admire your own reflection, oh tree,
Or see past your self to the great depths of me?
Would your roots drain bit by bit of my body by night and day?
Yet, leaving time for my replenishment, when err I say,
Or would you thirstily consume me, ignoring all my needs,
‘Till all you left of me was ugliness and weeds.
Would your falling leaves of pride be for your guise or my protection?
Though the cover is the same, the reason may be the objection.
Would you be a weeping willow, to cry upon my shoulder?
Or a little acorn, to grow wiser, as you grow older.
