As we embraced Karen whispered to me please be good. I will, I promise. The look in my eyes told her I was not lying at all. I will never leave you or hurt you. I told you that before. I then moved backward to let her retreat to her friends and family. Karen turned and started her way towards Anna. There were still people coming out of the church. I didn’t really notice it. My only sight was on her as we said goodbye to the families. I turned to see her mother waving that finger. The same one she waved at me when I asked Karen to marry me at the family picnic, on July the 4th of this year. That 4th of July was a hot mother sucker, the air was hot but the shade made it all cool. The music in the background was Teddy P Joy and Pain. My friends and some co-worker’s were there and the majority was Karen’s family and friends. They were dancing, kids playing their game-boys and running around, cards, dominoes, chess, and just plain old trash talking was in the air. Smoke from the grills in all directions and other families like ours out and about enjoying the day. I watched biker’s go around the park, tourist walk thru the grass and flower beds of roses, tulips and such. It was one of those times when you knew that GOD was smiling at you and at this beautiful world that he created. I had just gotten off the grill talking with her father and mother. I had asked them would it be okay that I stay in the family. They laughed and Mr. Watson said impatiently – go get my daughters hand in marriage. As I walked away I looked over my shoulder just in time to see him wipe the tears from her mother’s eyes as she smiled and waved that finger at me. Karen had just returned from the Honeychild spa off of LaSalle ST Downtown and we were at Grant Park not that far away from there. As I kneeled down on one knee and ask her to have my mother’s first grandchild from me and to be my wife. I heard her friend’s scream in shock and Karen screamed too, saying yes. As she jumped up and down all of the females congregated to her and the men to me too shake my hand. She showed the ring I showed a smile.

About the Book
Jerry is a well-educated man. Not only does he have a college degree, but he’s street-smart, having grown up selling drugs on the streets of Savannah, Georgia. He enlists in the army, but upon his return to civilian life, he goes back to his old, dangerous ways. After receiving his MBA, though, he finally realizes it’s time to move on; he heads to far-off Chicago, Illinois, looking for a new, clean start. He meets Karen—a beautiful woman who seemingly comes from a different world. She is highly educated, and her family fought brave battles in the Civil Rights movement. Jerry can’t help himself; he falls head-over-heels in love. Karen shows him a way to live a life of love, but she also shows him how to love her—in the bedroom and out. It’s never easy to escape the past, though, as Jerry soon discovers. Along with his newfound feelings for Karen, the skeletons in his closet come knocking. Can two people from different places and different backgrounds survive the sins of the past? In order to defeat dangerous obstacles, Jerry and Karen will have to lean on their passion for one another—or else fall into old habits and lost love.
About the Author
Terence Merritt lives in the Atlanta, Georgia, area, where he previously taught college for several years. As an enlisted man, he traveled overseas to Germany and Korea and learned to admire the world in all its God-given beauty.
