Covenant Can I ask you a question? If I were to give you my all Heart, mind, body and soul Would you be able to sustain? Sustain through the lies, infidelity and The games? Would you be able to love me unconditionally? In spite of my flaws? Will you be the man of my dreams? Who makes the heartbreaks worth it all? For I know it’s not all about me, but will You be able to see past my outside appearance, My physical beauty? Will you be able to realize that there is a Strong woman within, realize My beauty expands far beyond The outer layer of my skin? Can you accept my independent ways? And understand that it is me that Determines my success and not a man? I validate who I am as a woman with goals To excel A mind destined for greatness and in my life The will of God shall prevail Will you allow God to be the head of our house? Know all to him we owe? Stand by each other through the bad times, Sleight, hail and the snow? Will you believe together we were placed? And this will not change? Will you strive to keep our Fire burning for the rest of our days? Lastly Love me for me and give all you can? As you promise to stand by me, in turn I vow to stand by my man As a King I will treat you, no questions asked For it is you that God has given me Now it’s up to me to allow his words to come to pass The man’s response By your side my queen I will remain No matter the obstacles Struggle and the pain I vow to love you and you alone To allow God to be the King of our home I stand to be a provider for my family You’ve asked all these things, my queen In turn can you answer these questions, For me? You’ve said by your man will you stand What happens when things don’t work out as planned? My jobs fails and I can’t provide, Will you be that Shoulder I can lean to lean on to cry? Will you hurt my ego, because the things I can’t do? Will you neglect your marriage, because you are the bread winner? And your career is going well for you? Will you be a mother to my children? Please understand when I say there is a difference indeed Will you be a mother and not a mami? To nurture, love and protect Setting an example for them, as a woman, Having a strong influential impact? Can you fulfill your wifely duties alone? Keep a clean house, paying bills? Lastly making this house a home? Will you see past my flaws? Respect my ways, Love me in the face of trouble? For the rest of our days In the end all questions Will be answered with time Our marriage will be blessed as Long as God is the pilot And with him we fly. All these things from our hearts Do we vent, to you my wife this is my Covenant…..

Inspired by life’s obstacles, poet Kimplachat Downs promotes the empowerment of women in her poetry collection, Protecting Your Innocence. She encourages women to tell their stories, resulting in the shedding of excess baggage, bitter pasts, and vague future views about love. The key mission is for women to find their way back home resuming the role that it is okay to be loved beyond their pain.
Downs is an ambitious young woman with a story to tell, and she has found her passion in writing poetry for and about women. About the Author
Kimplachat A. Downs is a poet and inspirational speaker born in Gulfport, Mississippi, and raised in Norfolk, Virginia. At seventeen, she gave birth to her daughter, Deniyah. Shortly after graduation, she enlisted in the US Navy and is currently serving. She lives in Great Lakes, Illinois.
