"No, Hershey, no!" Aggie yelled. In the next moment a skunk sprayed her dog all over. Aggie managed to grab Hershey's leash to pull him away, when she too got sprayed. Quickly she pulled out her cell phone and clicked on nine-one-one. "Yes, this is an emergency! I stink of skunk. Connect me with Animal Control!" Dammit, she couldn't count on Randy for anything. He was supposed to have run off the skunk or called the people to come take care of it. Instead, Randy was busy spending her money, while the skunk was free to come and go beneath the old shed out back. Indoors Aggie rummaged in the cupboards, searching for the big cans of tomato juice Clara kept handy for this very purpose. Then she ran into the maid's bathroom behind the kitchen, peeled off her clothes, and stepped in the shower, spreading tomato juice first, followed by deodorant soap all over herself. With the towel wrapped around her head, Aggie tiptoed up the stairs after the hairdryer. She decided to sneak up on Randy, nuzzle his neck. The retreat she was booked to attend back east was billed to "Improve Family Relationships." She meant to get an early start. Instead, she got the surprise of her life. First, the scent of mulberry candles burning. Then a rumpled bed. She knew she'd made it that morning. She heard a scuffling in the hall, and then Aggie spotted her cousin, Lisa, dash out of the room and down the back staircase. Lisa wasn't wearing a stitch of clothing. Randy and Lisa had betrayed her, dammit! If she'd had a gun, she would've shot the two of them, hubby and double cousin, both. She and Lisa were double cousins because they were related on both sides; their fathers were brothers and their mothers were sisters. The women were best friends, too. Born in the same hospital, on the same cold night, they'd been bosom buddies all their lives. Now this, the bitter pill of betrayal. Aggie was furious. Rummaging in her dressing room for fresh clothes, she fantasized about throwing all of Randy's stuff out onto the front lawn as punishment for his screwing around on her. Three-plus decades of togetherness, from age fifteen. How dare he make love to another woman. Aggie was livid.

About the Book
Aggie suspects she was invited to the Vermont retreat because of her friendship with the President. Before leaving home, though, she catches her husband and cousin in bed! She is so enraged, if she had a gun she’d shoot them both! Thus overwrought, and convinced she knows what it feels like to contemplate murder, Aggie pursues one red herring after another in her half-hearted attempt to finger a serial killer running amok at the retreat before anybody else dies. Coming under suspicion are several “doubles” or pairs attending the retreat, people she thinks of now as her friends. Meanwhile, the Holloway brothers plan how to manipulate the scene from their pink canoe on Lake Bomoseen. They have planted a “live weapon,” a person they’ve hypnotized, to take out the President when he and the First Lady arrive at the retreat to visit their good friend, Aggie Morissey, whom the Holloways have been sure got an invitation to this conference on “Improving Family Relationships.
