I sat cross-legged at his feet. Since he had been hit on the right side of the head behind the ear, I searched and found a sensitive point on the big toe of the right foot, an area that corresponded to the ear zone. For fifteen or twenty minutes, I massaged this very sensitive area, but noticed no difference in his speech pattern.
Then it dawned on me that we were dealing with the brain, and that I should try to massage the left foot to affect the right side of the brain. The instant I found the corresponding point on the big toe of the left foot, my friend sat straight up in bed and exclaimed, "Eu posso falar perfectamente!" ("I can speak perfectly!") As I carefully maintained pressure on the reflex of the toe, we cried together for joy. Recovering from the overwhelming emotional impact that he experienced, he began to sing a Frank Sinatra song in English, and shared with me in perfect Portuguese that he never dreamed that he would be able to speak English again, much less sing it. I shared with him the simple technique for continuing the massage on his own.
Three days later at the end of the solar energy conference, he approached me to say good-bye, to thank me, and to inform me that he would return to his work at the university. During those three days he had continued the massage of his feet and his speech was near normal. Surprisingly, his hand was unfurled and usable. He extended it to shake my hand good-bye.

He has worked as a community development specialist in twenty countries.
